THE HISTORY OF DOMAINE DU PORTEREAU
A living heritage
At the heart of History
On the outskirts of Nantes, Château du Portereau reveals a haven where nature, heritage and the art of living converge. Nestled between the Sèvre River, the Muscadet vineyards, and centuries-old trees, the estates’ distinctive buildings tell their story, inviting visitors to slow down and savour the moment.
)
All around it, three-century-old plane trees, a two-hundred-year-old oak, and the dovecote-turned-kennel all bear witness to a carefully preserved heritage. A little further on, the pier is a reminder of the old port from which the estate takes its name : Le Portereau.
The Pavilion, which once housed the estate’s stables, has been entirely refurbished to accommodate a selection of rooms and the Spa. Within its restored walls, the Pavilion extends the estate’s history, offering a new way to experience the Château in keeping with its legacy and its distinctive art of living.

Built over 400 years ago in Vertou, Château du Portereau has witnessed the passage of time through the people who have brought it to life. The residence of successive families, it later became the hunting estate of the Lefèvre-Utile family, creators of the famous LU biscuits. They gifted the Château to the Confrérie des Montfortains, and it subsequently became the headquarters of Maisons du Monde. Today, the Château embodies a living memory of the region’s history. Its original fountain – now enhanced with a six-metre jet – and its recently rediscovered well complete this historical panorama. The cupola-crowned restaurant, formerly a chapel dating from the Montfortain congregation, recalls this chapter in the Château’s history.
